Senator Morrell announced the holiday essay contest in December 2013. The contest was open to all elementary, middle, and high school students of Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Bernard Parish schools.

“The holiday season is a time for family, celebration, and joy for people all around the world,” said Senator JP Morrell. “As the father of two children and the son of an educator, I know how hard our teachers work all year to keep our kids learning. I created the essay contest to keep our students engaged during the holiday break.”

Students from each the three parishes that Sen. Morrell represents were encouraged to submit essays answering the question:

“What makes the holiday season so important to you? In your essay, explain why your holiday traditions, experiences, and/or favorite memories make your holiday season special.”

Two contest winners from each parish were selected. The six winning students will receive a Kindle Fire for their hard work and accomplishments.
