New Orleans Wealth Advisor Reveals Financial and Life Advice in Letters Penned to His Young Daughter
NEW ORLEANS, LA – In recent years, financial advisors across the globe have weathered one financial storm after the next – but few experiences compare with Brad Fortier’s life in the months surrounding Hurricane Katrina.
“All I owned on August 30, 2005, was a change of clothes, a few toiletries, $2,500 and my wife’s heart,” Fortier writes in his new book Dear Kate: Reflections on Risk and Rewards after the Storm.
“I would later learn this was more than enough to find peace,” Fortier continues.
In the book, Fortier, a 38-year-old CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM practitioner and a Certified Estate PlannerTM, recounts his Hurricane Katrina experiences through touching letters he penned for his young daughter. Personal loss of all his worldly belongings and the lives of people close to him drove Brad to write the letters. The letters have been compiled in this book and offer a compelling blend of personal anecdotes and financial recommendations that apply to anyone living in today’s world. The reader will glean great advice on:
• Investing • Debt Estate planning • Health Insurance • Death Charitable giving • Success and failure • Risk
The letters offer the gentle guidance of a compassionate father nurturing his daughter through life’s inevitable obstacles, and Fortier invites the reader to eavesdrop on the entire conversation.
Brad shares many personal stories with his toddler daughter, including his struggle to cope with his brother’s suicide and his feelings of inadequacy to provide for his family as a young broker just starting in the world.
He also uses the intimate letters to provide practical advice.
“Kate, I want you to understand the importance of having adequate insurance. Don’t take on the risk of being underinsured, but don’t waste your hard-earned assets on being over-insured either,” Fortier writes.
Fortier’s reflections put true prosperity in perspective – expanding the definition of wealth beyond quantitative assets and emphasizing the value of relationships, charity and compassion.
“When you lose everything, and you have to put your life back together piece by piece, you start to prioritize your needs and the things that truly mater most to you surface – like my beautiful wife and daughter,” Fortier writes.
The letters come together in a gripping and inspiring journey of survival, perseverance and triumph. Fortier reveals his confrontation with issues everyone can relate to including:
• Fear of failure • Marital strife • Retirement planning • Parenting • Living within our means • Peer pressure
“I don’t claim that my way is the right way. It’s more of a find-your-own-way, but when you become lost, know that I too was lost. Being lost is part of the journey. The fact that we all take different roads in life is what makes us unique and separate. The idea that we are all traveling toward something is what connects us,” Fortier writes.
